Please find enclosed my article entitled, “Trial by Jury: The Erosion of Common Sense in Court.” Recently, the Springfield Legal Beat has printed articles on revising the judicial system, and I believe this article fits well with that theme. I will appreciate your considering it for publication.

The article exposes some of the weaknesses of trial by jury, namely the jury’s tendency to be easily distracted from the evidence by emotional appeals, the jury’s inability to follow the law as the judge instructs them, and the ease with which lawyers can choose jurors who will “vote their way.” Some Springfield citizens may not be aware of such intricacies in jury trials.

It’s time to express my appreciation for the great friendships I have had here at Fernandes’s over the past years. As some of you know, I am retiring at the end of May and plan to move to my old hometown of Springfield. I hope to do some writing on the history of that area before all the early residents are gone.

I know John has been considering two candidates for my position, and I feel good about them both. Either is qualified to do an excellent job. Each has a wealth of experience and both are amiable co-workers. I feel good that I am leaving my work in their capable hands.

The annual company picnic will be held at Fernandes Reservoir beach on Saturday, July 23, starting at 8:00 a.m. All employees and their families are invited.

Last year’s picnic provided an excellent chance to unwind after the busiest time of the year, and we all returned to work rejuvenated, if a little tired. We plan again to feature volleyball, softball, swimming and water-skiing (with at least three boats in the water!). Of course the chili cookoff will be the centerpiece of the movable feast we have planned.

The company will provide basic barbecue fare (including vegetarian entrees) and sporting equipment, but all are encouraged to bring along their own food and fun as well.

Please let Shawn knows by June 28 how many persons will be in your party. Get ready for a wonderful time!
